In our fast-paced lives, we often move from one experience to the next without pausing to reflect on how we've changed. This lack of introspection can prevent us from gaining valuable insights into the events that shape us. Digital storytelling provides a powerful medium for this self-analysis, encouraging individuals to process and reframe their experiences. It transforms the participant's journey into a final product— reflective of their creativity and growth.

This is what the Community College Initiative Program (CCI) had in mind when partnering with StoryCollab for a group workshop. In this workshop, international students took a transformative moment from their experience abroad and shaped it into a short digital narrative, while collaborating and sharing their final stories with their CCI peers.

A Shift in Perspective: Dailin

Dailin, a 21-year-old student from the Dominican Republic, was one of the participants in this digital storytelling workshop. Initially, Dailin was focused on sharing a story about her admiration for her social host (aka “host mother). However, through the process of reflection and guidance, her story evolved into a narrative about her personal journey toward independence. “In the first draft, I noticed everything I admired in my social host was related to being independent," Dailin said. "Allison, one of the facilitators, asked me why I cared so much about that. Like, what’s the real meaning for me?” Dailin went on to explain how this question made her realize that her admiration for her social host was really about her desire for independence and “the chance in America [for her] to try.”

This shift in perspective was significant for Dailin. Growing up in a protective environment, she had few opportunities to try new things without the comfort of her family. But the digital storytelling process allowed her to recognize just how self-sufficient she had become during her time abroad. "I didn't notice that I did so many things until I started writing [my script]," Dailin said. "Living alone in the U.S. and reflecting on my experiences made me realize how much I had grown." Before coming to the U.S. she had never ridden a bike for fear of getting hit by a car or kidnapped. Now she rides her bike everywhere, from class to the supermarket.

Using the Seven Elements of Digital Storytelling

The digital storytelling process is one that often leads to unexpected revelations. Using the "Seven Elements of Digital Storytelling" (finding your moment, insight, and emotion; as well as seeing, hearing, assembling, and sharing your story), participants delve deep into their experiences to narrate a defining moment in their lives. With a facilitator's guidance, they record their story and add images, video clips, and sometimes music or other sounds. The combination of these digital components results in a powerful memorialization of their journey. Dailin found that this approach helped her process her new experiences abroad. "When you're just living your life, you don't notice all the things that have been happening to you," she reflected. "You don't stop to think, what’s the value in this? What can I learn from this?” She shows us how storytelling can help people slow down and acknowledge how much they’ve changed. (Watch Dailin’s story: “Just Speed Bumps.”)

Remembering a Pivotal Experience: Vishal

Vishal, a student from India, had a similar transformative experience. As he began writing his story, he recalled how he worked extremely hard during his education and made countless sacrifices in hopes of a better future for his family. "But I did not take the time to acknowledge the importance of what I did and how I got here,” he shared, referring to the opportunity to study abroad through CCI. "In the workshop, Allison helped me write a story by asking questions that made me reflect deeply on my past." For Vishal, the process of writing and introspection prompted a significant shift in his perspective. Initially, his drafts focused on the joyful moment when he told his family about being selected for the CCI scholarship, highlighting the struggles they endured to support his education. However, as he shared his story with workshop participants, Vishal realized that this moment was more about his family than his own personal growth. Reflecting deeper, he remembered a pivotal experience during his time abroad—giving a speech in English in front of other CCI students. This moment provided a sharp contrast to the Vishal in India, who was too afraid to speak in front of his classmates. His final story focuses on this transformation, demonstrating his newfound confidence and ability to inspire others to reach their goals. “I felt accomplished knowing that this was a direct result of all my hard work. I realized that anything is possible if you have faith in yourself.”

Digital Storytelling Circles are Safe Spaces to be Vulnerable

Digital storytelling not only prompts reflection but also allows individuals to share their stories with others, creating a sense of connection and support among those in similar situations. The workshops provide a collaborative environment where participants brainstorm ideas and revise drafts alongside their peers, making the story shared at the final viewing party even more impactful. "I think a lot of girls and boys who go abroad for the first time feel the same way I did," Dailin said. "Seeing my story might help them feel less alone and more inspired to embrace their independence." Sharing her story publicly was both nerve-wracking and rewarding. "I felt vulnerable exposing myself, talking about my family and my personal growth," she admitted. "But in the end, it was nice. It helped me feel confident about my journey and the story I had to tell." (Watch Vishal’s story: “Motivation.”)

A Powerful Tool for Transformation

Like Dailin, Vishal's experience with digital storytelling extends far beyond personal reflection and into the lives of others. “Seeing my journey of hard work and success can be a powerful motivator,” he speculates. “Everyone has the same potential to achieve their goals, no matter where they come from. I want to remind people who have struggled that their dreams are possible no matter what obstacles they’ve faced.” Vishal's drive to connect with people in similar situations underscores the profound impact narrative can have. The vulnerable nature of storytelling strips away barriers and creates a sense of shared experience, bridging gaps between different cultures and backgrounds.

Encouraging Growth. Appreciating the Journey

The digital storytelling process is about more than just creating a final video; it is a powerful tool for transformation. Reflection through narrative fosters a deeper understanding of personal identity, encouraging you to appreciate your growth and view your journey from a new perspective. In our busy lives, we seldom pause to examine our experiences and share them with others. Digital storytelling offers that rare opportunity. For some students, this opportunity appears while they’re abroad, but might have the greatest impact when they return home.
